What is Discrimination?

Discrimination is an action or a decision that treats a person or a group badly for reasons such as their race, age, or disability. These reasons, also called grounds, are protected under the Canadian Human Rights Act.

Grounds for Discrimination include:

  1. race
  2. national or ethnic origin
  3. colour
  4. religion
  5. age
  6. sex
  7. sexual orientation
  8. gender identity or expression
  9. marital status
  10. family status
  11. disability
  12. genetic characteristics
  13. a conviction for which a pardon has been granted or a record suspended
